I want to share my sons very scary hospital stay. It all started on January 2nd Jeremy came home sick from aunt house with a mild fever. School was going to start on the 4th so I went ahead and made an appointment with his pediatrician they said he had the flu and sent us home, he complained about his left leg bothering him but we just figured it was body aches.
Tuesday he woke up not able to move his leg without screaming in excruciating pain. Took him to the ER that night and they diagnosed him with Transient Synovitis got his fever down from 104.5 and sent us home. They said it was no big deal and a lot of kids have it. He was hallucinating with this high fever. Went home and each day it got worse and worse. Took him back to the ER on Thursday telling them out was not going away and he was in horrific pain. Screaming all night long for me. I cried right along with him. It was horrible. They tried to do an MRI but he would not lay still long enough and having to keep a pillow under his knees was no help. They gave him 2 doses of morphine and a sleeping med....did nothing for him.
That night they transferred us to another hospital with a pediatric specialist. A few hours after we got they they did a ultrasound of his hip and it showed a little swelling. The next day Friday they said they were going to stick a needle in his hip and see if any fluid would come out. They took him in to have his surgery before going in they checked his fever it was 107.5 YES you read that right!! None of the doctors or nurses have seen that and someone live through it. They said an adult would have not lived with that high of a fever.
I was terrified.
They finally took him in after getting his fever down with ice under his arms, a fan blowing air in him, a hose that blows cool air down his gown. They were finally able to take him in and they stuck the needle in...nothing but puss..sorry... They opened him up immediately and flushed out his hip. Mind you he is 5. Brought him out and said he has a horrible infection and will remain in the hospital.
My head was spinning..how was I going to keep my kids and be with my child who is scared to death and very ill.
Thankfully I have an amazing family and a bunch of aunts who came straight to my side.
Over the next two Weeks we find out he was positive for staph in his blood on the Tuesday we took him to the ER. The blood infection went to his hip and caused a very very bad infection. He stayed positive for almost 2 Weeks.
They changed his antibiotics numerous times trying to figure out wht it wasn't killing the staph his blood. It was killing it in the lab but not in his body. His fever kept spiking all day long. They had no idea why. His leg was not getting better so 5 days later another surgery. This time they only found cloudy fluid but that's why he was still hurting horribly. The doctor was glad he went back in to flush it again. He began feeling better slowly.
During his 12 day hospital stay we had the best nurses and doctors anyone should ask for. We were blessed. Daily his fever would go more and more down. He had a picc line put in on the 16th. He will take antibiotics for 4 Weeks at home. Whatever it takes to get my baby boy healthy. He was released on January 17, he was so happy. He was so tired of being poked all the time. He is at home now and doing great walking better daily and will have his picc Line removed on Wednesday. He can't wait. He has been complaining of his shoulder hurting so they want to remove it in case of a blood clot. He will have oral antibiotics. He has a wheel chair and walker to go to school in, he started last Monday. I am going to talk to them about letting him walk on his own a little at school. His physical therapy will go to his school and work with him. I am so glad this is all coming to an end. We had so many prayers for our little guy. God is a healer and my son is proof.
